Promotions Duane Morris (Philadelphia): Three attorneys in the intellectual property practice group have become partners: Gary D. Colby (biotechnology, medical and chemical technologies) and John M. Neclerio (software companies and Internet service providers) are based in Philadelphia, and Paul A. Schwarz (patent prosecution and opinion work) practices in Princeton, N.J. New Arrivals Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld: Paul W. Butler, former special assistant to Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, has joined the firm as a partner in the white-collar criminal defense practice, resident in Washington. He will counsel clients in Department of Justice and Department of Defense-related matters. Alston & Bird (Atlanta): Paul S. Donohue, John F. Baron and James A.L. Daniel Jr. have joined the firm’s Charlotte, N.C., office as partners. Donohue is to head the leveraged capital team and Baron will be the lead tax partner. DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary: Troy Zander has rejoined the firm’s San Diego office as a finance practice partner. The San Francisco office has added partners Arthur S. Beeman and Pamela K. Fulmer to the patent litigation practice group. REIT and real estate private equity fund experts Leslie H. Loffman (New York) and Sanford C. Presant (Century City, Calif.) are new partners in the real estate capital markets practice group. Duane Morris (Philadelphia): The firm’s Chicago office has added new partner Vincent Oleszkiewicz, formerly of Baker & McKenzie, to its environmental practice group. Foley Hoag (Boston): Martin C. Pentz has been hired as a partner and co-chairman in the insurance recovery practice group. He arrives from Boston’s Nutter McClennen & Fish, where he chaired the insurance coverage group. Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw (Chicago): Fred W. Hartman, tax counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business, and advisor to Senator Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, has joined the firm, resident in Washington. He will focus his practice on federal tax legislation policy. Miles & Stockbridge (Baltimore): Alfred Wurglitz has signed on with the firm as a principal. Working out of the Rockville, Md., and Tysons Corner, Va., offices, Wurglitz will focus his practice on government contracts and technology transactions. Phillips Lytle: (Buffalo, N.Y.): Stephen J. Di Cioccio is a new partner in the firm’s New York City office, having made the move from McGuireWoods. He represents foreign and domestic banks and corporations in a variety of transactions and regulatory matters. New Counsel McDermott, Will & Emery: Wesley Strickland has returned to the firm as counsel to the San Diego office’s intellectual property, media and technology department. His practice focuses on researching and prosecuting patents in the network infrastructure and client/server applications areas. Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison (New York): Corinna Yu, of the corporate department in the firm’s Beijing office, has been elected to counsel. A member of the communications and technology group, she oversees the firm’s operations in the Chinese capital. Strasburger & Price (Dallas): Douglas N. Jacobson has come aboard as of counsel to the international practice area of the firm’s Washington office. The international trade lawyer counsels clients on issues relating to import and export regulations and transactions. In-House Marsh & McLennan Cos. (New York): Richard Sullivan has arrived as deputy general counsel for litigation, with the responsibility of overseeing all litigation and regulatory matters involving March & McLennan. Melvin A. Schwarz will be joining as general counsel of its reinsurance subsidiary Guy Carpenter. Nominated Stewart A. Baker, a partner at Washington firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP, has received a presidential nomination to serve as assistant secretary of homeland security (policy). He leads his firm’s e-commerce/ Internet practice, handling matters of national security and law enforcement, infrastructure protection and data security. Elected Anthea R. Daniels, a partner at Cleveland-based Calfee, Halter & Griswold, has become president-elect of the board of directors of Washington’s American Health Lawyers Association, a group servicing 9,500 health care attorneys. Daniels, who focuses on health care, corporate and nonprofit law, has also taught at Case Western Reserve University Law School. Jim Scheinkman, a partner at Snell & Wilmer’s Orange County, Calif., office, has become president of the Orange County chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth. The association’s 9,000 members are dedicated to corporate growth and development, and mergers and acquisitions for midsized to large companies. Appointed John A. Azzarello, a Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham partner and former counsel to the 9/11 Commission, has been named to the advisory board of the International Center for Enterprise Preparedness at New York University. Based on congressional recommendations, the center focuses on workplace safety, private-sector crisis management and business continuity. David R. Carlisle, a shareholder in the Miami office of Orlando, Fla.-headquartered Akerman Senterfitt, has been reappointed to serve as chair of the guardianship law and procedure committee for the Florida Bar’s Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section.
