AMERICAN TELEMEDICINE ASSOCIATION Robert Waters, a partner at Gardner Carton & Douglas and general counsel to the Center for Telemedicine Law, received the American Telemedicine Association’s 2005 Leadership Award for the Advancement of Telemedicine. The award honors “individual leadership and championship in promoting and advocating for telemedicine/telehealth, e-health.” Waters was selected to receive the award by a panel of experts in medicine and technology.
AMERICAN UNIVERSITY WASHINGTON COLLEGE OF LAW Howrey partner Karen Lockwood has received the Women and the Law Leadership Award from American University’s Washington College of Law. The award recognizes her as “a pioneer for women and all people in the workplace.”
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES Areta Kupchyk, a partner in the D.C. office of Reed Smith, has been honored by the Department of Health and Human Services for distinguished service as a member of the Tissue Action Plan Team. The team developed new rules that set federal government requirements on the way human tissue is recovered, processed, packaged, and shipped to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases.
MARYLAND LEGAL AID BUREAU’S EQUAL JUSTICE COUNCIL Venable received the eighth annual “Pacesetter Award” from the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau’s Equal Justice Council. The award recognizes Venable’s support and leadership in strengthening the bureau’s ability to provide legal services to Maryland’s indigent.
MINTZ LEVIN COHN FERRIS GLOVSKY AND POPEO Chérie Kiser has been named managing partner of the D.C. office of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo. Kiser is also chair of the firm’s communications section, a member of the Policy Committee, and chair of the Diversity Committee.
ROBINS, KAPLAN, MILLER & CIRESI Keith Styles, the managing partner for the D.C. office of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi, has been appointed to a one-year term on the firm’s Executive Board.
SUTHERLAND ASBILL & BRENNAN Nicholas Christakos, of the D.C. office of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, is one of two partners at the firm who were elected to the firm’s executive committee. Christakos is the head of the firm’s financial services litigation team. — Hilary Lewis
