Mr. Siskind’s editorial was informative about the distinctions that “conservatives” draw between themselves [" In Search of Those 'Conservative' Judicial Nominees," April 29]. However, he failed to explain why “liberals” should care about such broad distinctions rather than the fact that individuals who fall wholly into any of such categories are outside the mainstream values of the American public. In fact (and facts should ultimately form the foundation of any line of reasoning), if Senate Democrats really react with “undifferentiating hostility” to “conservative” judicial nominations, there could hardly have been the some 200 judicial confirmations that have occurred while Bush has been president. It thus appears that Senate Democrats are distinguishing between “conservatives.” It would have been welcome if Mr. Siskind had indicated which “conservative” camp he is in and, therefore, which of the “conservative” judicial nominees he opposes. As it stands, it appears that any “conservative” judicial nominee will meet his “undifferentiating” acceptance. Thus, he exemplifies the “problem” he deplores. Tahir J. Naim Mountain View
