Credit Greg Andres with taking down one of the largest known crime families in the country. As a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, N.Y., for nearly six years, Andres has spent much of his time prosecuting the Bonanno organized crime family, led by long-time crime boss Joseph Massino. At the time of his arrest, Massino was the highest-ranking mob boss in the nation. Andres served as the lead prosecutor at Massino’s trial, which resulted in his conviction for racketeering, attempted murder, arson, loansharking, extortion and money laundering dating back nearly 30 years. Press accounts have noted that Massino is currently cooperating against another reputed major organized crime figure, Vincent “Vinnie Gorgeous” Basciano. If true, Massino would be the first boss ever to do so. As a result, Andres is widely credited with dismantling the Bonanno family since 2002. Andres has won more than 55 convictions of members of the Bonanno family with others still pending. He was the subject of recent media coverage when allegations arose that Basciano intended to kill the prosecutor. He has prosecuted more than 100 organized crime figures during his tenure in the Eastern District of New York, charging more than 45 murders, murder conspiracies and attempted murders.
