San Francisco Cooley Godwardhas appointed litigation partner Thomas Friel Jr.,a resident of the firm’s Palo Alto and San Francisco offices, to head its Bay Area intellectual property practice. Friel represents clients in complex patent litigation involving high-tech products and procedures. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1977. Thomas Zimmerwas named chair of the finance group within the business law section of Holland & Knight.Zimmer practices in the areas of structured finance and the representation of companies in the financial, transportation, health care and technology industries. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan. Northern District U.S. Judge William Schwarzerhas been selected as the 2004 recipient of the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award. Schwarzer was chosen by a three-judge panel chaired by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. The panel wrote that “Judge Schwarzer has been a brilliant, distinguished, compassionate servant of the law and has served as a federal judge for nearly three decades.” South Bay Baker & McKenzieannounced that Scott Frewinghas been elected partner. Frewing works in the firm’s Palo Alto office in its tax litigation and white-collar criminal defense groups. Frewing received his J.D. from Georgetown University in 1997. Two associates were also added to the Palo Alto office: Jason Francl, a 1997 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Law, and Zhao Yang, who received law degrees from Beijing University Law School and Harvard Law School. Southern California Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hamptonhas added David Sunkinto its Los Angeles office as a partner in the corporate practice group. Sunkin earned his J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1992. The firm also added Erik Blissas special counsel to its business trial practice group in San Diego. Bliss, an expert in consumer fraud, trade regulation, antitrust and business tort matters, earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1995. Peter Connollyhas joined Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Marmaroas of counsel, bringing more than 30 years of hotel operator and developer experience to the firm’s Global Hospitality Group. Connolly is a graduate of Catholic University Law School.
