In the March 14 issue, the bylined article ” Nonprofits Under Fire” (Page 26) misdescribed the relationship between new American Hospital Association guidelines, a statement by the Department of Health and Human Services, and recent class actions against nonprofit hospitals. In fact, in December 2003, the AHA issued both a statement of principles regarding billing and collection practices, and a legal analysis contending that federal regulations hamper hospital efforts to assist patients of limited means. In February 2004, the HHS Office of Inspector General stated that federal law does not prevent hospitals from providing financial relief to uninsured patients. The AHA statement of principles was not altered after HHS’s statement. In June 2004, the first of the class actions were filed. The correction has been made to the online version of the article.
