San Francisco Latham & Watkins announced that Christopher Yates, an IP and antitrust litigation expert who recently defended Oracle against the Department of Justice, has been elevated from of counsel to partner. Yates, who also counts Genentech and Apple Computer among his clients, is a 1992 graduate of Columbia Law School. Scott DeVries has been reelected to a sixth term as managing partner at Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott. According to the firm, DeVries has overseen a nearly 80 percent increase in gross revenue, a 50 percent increase in attorneys and lobbyists, as well as many organizational changes. DeVries is a graduate of Hastings College of the Law. Three attorneys have been elevated to partner at Seyfarth Shaw. Jesse Miller, a litigation specialist, earned his J.D. at George Washington University Law School in 1996. Dana Peterson, who focuses on labor and employment law, is a 1995 graduate of Hastings College of the Law. And Christian Rowley, also in labor and employment law, earned his J.D. from the University of Utah in 1993. Harvey Siskind Jacobs announced that Seth Appel has joined the firm as an associate. Appel, a 2004 graduate of Columbia Law School, will focus on copyright, trademark and commercial litigation for high-tech and business clients. The late Edward “Ted” Steefel, a founding partner of Steefel, Levitt & Weiss, was honored with a memorial plaque at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in appreciation of his many contributions to the center and to San Francisco’s arts community. A ceremony for Steefel, who died in 2002, was held on March 22. South Bay Karineh Khachatourian, an associate in the Palo Alto office of Dechert, was given an Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service Award from the Volunteer Legal Services Program, the pro bono arm of the San Francisco Bar Association. Khachatourian, an intellectual property and commercial litigator, successfully handled two recent eviction defense matters for the disadvantaged people VLSP serves. She is a 1997 graduate of George Washington University Law School. East Bay Walnut Creek-based Archer Norris has added Virginia Peiser as of counsel to the firm’s tax and estate planning practice. Peiser, who has focused on tax, business and estate planning matters for 30 years, is a 1975 graduate of Hastings College of the Law. Southern California Greenberg Traurig continues to expand its Los Angeles office, bringing Robyn Polashuk to its corporate department as of counsel. Polashuk, formerly the vice president of distribution legal affairs at Lifetime Television, has extensive experience in the licensing and distribution of television networks and broadcast stations. She is a 1994 graduate of UCLA School of Law. Grotta, Glassman & Hoffman announced that it has added a new senior counsel, Lester Aponte, to its Los Angeles office. Aponte received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1989. Manuel Saldana, an experienced trial attorney and an expert in legal matters throughout Latin America, has joined Gordon & Rees as a partner in its Newport Beach and Los Angeles offices. Saldana is a 1988 graduate of Hastings College of the Law.
