D.C. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Dianne Pickersgill, an associate at Hessel and Aluise, was elected to the board of D.C. Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity works to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness in the District by building affordable homes with volunteer labor. MARKMAN PROCESS Kenneth Bass III, of counsel at Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox, has been appointed chair of the Sedona Conference Working Group on the Markman Process. The working group will study the wide disparities that courts use in the “Markman” process by which patents are construed and will develop a “best practices” for use by all federal courts. NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY The National Capital Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognized Charles Goldman, a D.C. solo practitioner, with a services award for his dedication and commitment to the chapter and the individuals it serves. Goldman has served on the chapter’s Legal Advisory Committee for almost 15 years and has offered hours of pro bono services to individuals with MS who have experienced workplace discrimination. NIGHTINGALE’S HEALTHCARE NEWS Jesse Witten, a partner in the litigation and health care divisions at Jones Day, has been named Outstanding Healthcare Litigator�2004 by Nightingale’s Healthcare News, a newsletter that caters to health care industry executives and professionals. Among the cases that were specifically cited by the publication were the defense of civil actions alleging false reporting of price information to Medicare and the defense of Food and Drug Administration fraud charges. SKADDEN FELLOWSHIP FOUNDATION The law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom announced the selection of 28 Skadden fellows for the class of 2005, three of whom will be working in the D.C. area. Each fellow in the two-year program will provide civil legal assistance to those in need through various nonprofit organizations, while receiving a salary paid by the Skadden Fellowship Foundation. Autumn Elliott, of Harvard Law School, will work at Bread for the City on direct representation of disabled persons facing eviction. Amy Myers, of the University of Michigan Law School, will work at Women Empowered Against Violence on direct legal services and community education for domestic violence victims in danger of losing their children. Adam Stofsky, of Harvard Law School, will work at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law on impact litigation and community outreach for vulnerable lowest-wage workers. UPS The United Parcel Service has named King & Spalding its Core Counsel Network Law Firm of the Year. The Core Counsel Network was created by UPS in 1999 as a way to consolidate the company’s legal providers from 200 to 25 firms.
