LAWYERS HELPING LAWYERS David Mercer, a partner in the Tysons Corner, Va., office of Troutman Sanders, was elected president of Lawyers Helping Lawyers. He will serve a two-year term. The group provides nondisciplinary assistance to members of the legal profession who suffer from substance abuse or mental health problems. NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR FINANCIAL EDUCATION Nixon Peabody’s G. Joseph Votava Jr. has been elected vice chairman of the National Endowment for Financial Education. NEFE is the country’s largest private foundation promoting financial literacy. Votava’s practice concentrates on individual taxation, investments, employee benefits, and estate and financial planning for corporate executives and closely held businesses. NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TRIAL ADVOCACY Daniel Toomey, a partner at Venable in the firm’s construction group, has been appointed by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy as the program director of its Washington, D.C., Advanced Advocates Program. He has been teaching trial advocacy for the past 27 years and was an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center. NIGHTINGALE’S HEALTHCARE NEWS Stephanie Webster of Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville was named one of 12 outstanding health care litigators in the nation by Nightingale’s Healthcare News in its November/December 2004 issue. Now a partner in the firm’s health care section, Webster previously spent several years in the Health Care Financing Division of the Office of the General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
