SAN JOSE — A former manager at Hewlett-Packard Corp. will take the presidency of the Santa Clara County Bar Association next month with a mission to continue promoting technology in bar services. Julia Emede, a 43-year-old family law dependency attorney, also will become the first openly lesbian president in the 3,700-member organization’s history. Deputy District Attorney Christopher Arriola, former head of Santa Clara’s La Raza Lawyers Association, will be the president-elect in 2005 and head the organization in 2006. Emede, a family law and dependency attorney with San Jose’s Schlepphorst & Emede, said her priorities include continuing to make technology a key part of the bar association functions and fighting for ample funding of legal and judiciary services. The Santa Clara bar, California’s fourth largest, has managed to grow steadily thanks to such programs as streaming legal education and online bar meetings. More traditional bar associations have struggled, Emede said. “This organization needs to be about promoting and providing these [technology] services because the need is so great,” Emede said. “We need to make technology available to people so every bar service is at their fingertips on their computer.” Emede added that she will continue to emphasize the importance of racial and sexual diversity in the legal profession and in the county bar. Emede, who did her undergraduate work at Michigan State University, had not planned to become a lawyer. She said she moved to Northern California shortly after completing college in 1984 because work in the automobile industry was dwindling. She found a job with Hewlett-Packard and was promoted through the ranks to production planning manager, where she handled logistics for several offshore HP locations. Emede eventually accepted voluntary severance from HP. During the following year, she decided to pursue a law career and enrolled at Hastings College of the Law. “I was responsible for large production facilities, so only having to worry about my own performance was a lot less stressful,” she said. After graduating in 1995, Emede worked as a business litigator at Makoff Kinnear Counsel in San Francisco before pursuing domestic law. President-elect Arriola, 35, is a 1995 gradate of Boalt Hall School of Law and handles juvenile cases for the DA’s office. Arriola will manage all bar association business when Emede is away and take her position in 2006. Mark Shem of Borton, Petrini & Conron will be the treasurer of the organization in 2005, and My-Le Jacqueline Duong of the county counsel’s office will be secretary. Emede will be officially installed as president Jan. 19.
