SEVEN NEW PARTNERS AT TOWNSEND Townsend and Townsend and Crew is elevating seven associates to partner effective Jan. 1. The promotions boost Townsend’s partnership ranks to 81. The 170-attorney firm promoted eight associates last year. This year’s new partners are based in four of Townsend’s six offices. Three are in the firm’s San Francisco headquarters. They include April Abele, a 1995 graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law; Laurence Hyman, who obtained his J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1976 and was an official at the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Technology Transfer prior to joining Townsend; and Igor Shoiket, who graduated in 1997 from the University of San Francisco School of Law. Sujit Kotwal, a 1997 graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law, joins the partnership ranks in Palo Alto. In the firm’s Walnut Creek office Gerald Gray, who obtained his law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1996, was named partner. And in Townsend’s Denver office, Thomas Franklin, a 1997 graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law, and Ian Saffer, who received his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1996, were elevated to partner. — Brenda Sandburg REED SMITH LIFTS TWO IN BAY AREA Reed Smith announced Monday it has elevated two associates to partner in Bay Area offices effective Jan. 1. In the San Francisco office, Karen Braje, 35, a business trial attorney, made partner. She received her J.D. in 1997 from George Washington University Law School. In the Oakland office, the firm promoted Theodore Ting, 34, who is also a business trial attorney. He earned his J.D. in 1997 from Loyola Marymount University. Reed Smith, a 1,000-attorney firm with offices in 14 U.S. cities and two U.K. cities, named 24 partners firmwide — one fewer than last year. — Marie-Anne Hogarth
