DYKEMA GOSSETT Stephen Zimmerman has been appointed to serve a two-year term on Dykema Gossett’s executive board, beginning January 2005. Zimmerman oversees the firm’s D.C. office and federal lobbying program. He also coordinates the firm’s financial services regulatory program. MARYLAND STATE BAR ASSOCIATION Kathleen McDermott, a partner in the health law and white collar practice groups at Blank Rome, has been appointed chair of the Litigation Section Council for the Maryland State Bar Association. The council focuses on elevating the level of trial and appellate practice in state and federal courts serving Maryland in order to further promote the objectives of the state bar. McDermott, who is also vice chair of the Fraud and Abuse Practice Group of the American Health Lawyers Association, will serve a one-year term on the council. NATIONAL LEGAL AID & DEFENDER ASSOCIATION Donald Verrilli Jr., a partner at Jenner & Block, is this year’s recipient of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association’s Arthur von Briesen Award, given to a private attorney who has made substantial volunteer contributions in support of civil legal aid or indigent defense representation. Verrilli was recognized for his more than two decades of pro bono work on behalf of death row inmates, along with his average of 200-plus hours per year of pro bono work during his time at Jenner & Block. WOMEN IN HOUSING AND FINANCE Carol Van Cleef, a partner in the financial services practice at Katten Muchin Zavis Rosenman, was one of 10 women honored by Women in Housing and Finance Inc., a nonpartisan association of individuals in the housing and financial services fields, at its 25th anniversary gala.
