NovaDel Pharma Inc. just filled an important prescription: The Flemington, New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company hired Jean Frydman, 51, as its first in-house lawyer and general counsel. The company needed a lawyer because it has been growing rapidly adding new employees and developing new delivery mechanisms for over-the-counter and prescription drugs, including oral sprays and soft-bite gelatin capsules. At press time NovaDel was preparing to file its first product-approval submission with the Food and Drug Administration. Frydman is well equipped to help usher NovaDel into the pharmaceutical big time. Coming most recently from Pfizer Inc., where she was associate GC, she is a 20-year veteran of the pharmaceutical industry and a former scientist herself. Her legal career began when she enrolled in Chicago-Kent College of Law’s night program. By day she did regulatory affairs work in the diagnostics division of Abbott Park, Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories. Since then, says Frydman, her two professional interests have melded perfectly: “I’m always dealing with science, as a lawyer, and I also interact with scientists on a daily basis.” And judging by Frydman’s packed schedule in the coming weeks and months, she won’t be short on interacting. On her calendar: meetings with the head of the audit committee and board of directors to discuss corporate governance, discussions about HR matters with management, and polishing NovaDel’s first FDA filing. If only NovaDel sold NoDoz caffeine pills.
