In Wednesday’s article, “Feds Move To Bump Defender,” [July 7]it was suggested that federal prosecutors’ (now failed) efforts to remove Assistant Federal Public Defender Shawn Halbert from a complicated and serious federal criminal case could have backfired, since “some of the best lawyers in town would try to pick up the case.” I hope this was not meant as a commentary on Halbert’s relative prowess. If so, it was uninformed. A more thorough analysis would mention that in her last outing against the very successful prosecutor who moved to recuse her, Halbert managed to have an attempted murder count dismissed before acquitting her client or hanging the jury on all remaining counts. If you look at her tenure as an AFPD, you will find the same result repeated numerous times. Instead of unfair insinuations about her ethics, combined with lengthy speculation about prosecutorial motives, this remarkable history would have sufficed. If you are asking why pitchers pitch around a batter, you must first look up her batting average. John Paul Reichmuth Oakland
