When she left the St. Louis office of Thompson Coburn to join the in-house counsel set, Jan Alonzo did not need to relocate. But if she had, her new employer would have been well equipped to handle the job. Alonzo recently became general counsel of Unigroup, Inc., a moving and storage company based in St. Louis. Unigroup is the parent company of United Van Lines, Mayflower Transit, and other well-known transportation-related companies. Alonzo’s move likely will not require her to stray far from her professional comfort zone, either. She represented Unigroup during her tenure at Thompson Coburn and says her experiences with the company contributed to her decision to accept a job as its general counsel. “I had gotten to know the company and was presented with a great opportunity,” she says. But Alonzo’s decision did require some chutzpah. The GC job at Unigroup is her first move in more than 20 years. She joined Thompson Coburn, where she was an associate for five years and a partner for 15, right after graduating from law school at the University of Missouri, where she also got her undergraduate degree. As Unigroup’s new GC, Alonzo replaces the retiring Morton Golder, who seemingly shares Alonzo’s loyalty. A 20-year veteran of the company, Golder held various management positions at Unigroup including general counsel and will continue on at the company as a consultant.
