An extremely broad, 86-page ruling, buttressed by her findings that the witnesses are not credible and Congress’s inferences were not reasonable, finding every aspect of the government’s case without merit, “should help insulate Hamilton from claims that she is an activist’ judge who decided the case because of political beliefs” ["Hamilton ices ban on partial-birth' abortion," June 2]. Gee. I would have thought the opposite in spite of the three quotes supporting the plaintiffs’ position. By the way, what ever happened to the old-fashioned practice of simply reporting the facts? The fact that the pro-abortion people are very happy with the ruling is very clear, but the ruling itself is less clear. On the other hand, given the reputation of this particular judge, and the Ninth Circuit as a group, maybe all stories reporting their rulings should start out defensively. As a pro-abortion person myself, I would have liked to have seen a concise outline of the briefs from both sides rather than a “puff piece” about this particular judge.
