In Insurance Company Merger

Health insurance giant UnitedHealth Group has agreed to merge with Oxford Health Plans, Inc. in a deal valued at close to $5 billion. The stock and cash transaction will give UnitedHealth 1.5 million new members.

Oxford is a health insurer with a large member-base in areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The company was founded in 1984.

After the merger, Oxford will keep its name and operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of UnitedHealthcare.

The merger was announced only a short time after talks of a possible acquisition of Oxford by WellChoice Inc. fell through.

In Vans Acquisition by VF Corp.

Shoe and apparel maker Vans Inc., has been acquired by the VF Corporation for approximately $396 million.

Vans is an industry leader in the action sports market, which includes sports such as skateboarding and surfing. The deal will provide VF Corp., the world’s largest apparel company, with a recognizable name in an expanding market.

Vans is a company that appeals to young consumers ages 10 to 24. It seeks to reach customers through the sponsorship of events that include the VANS Warped Tour. The traveling festival features music acts and demonstrations focusing on the action sports culture.

The company operates 155 retail stores in the U.S. and Europe.
