AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION Georgetown University Law Center professor David Cole has been named a Human Rights Hero by the Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section of the American Bar Association. The ABA praised Cole for his work in the area of defending civil liberties. BAKER & MCKENZIE INTERNATIONAL LAW LECTURE SERIES Georgetown University Law Center has established an annual lecture series sponsored by Baker & McKenzie. The series will focus on international law and policy. The first lecture will be held April 19. GLOBAL RIGHTS Kurt Schmoke, Howard University School of Law dean and former mayor of Baltimore, has been named to the Global Rights board of directors along with two others. Formerly known as the International Human Rights Law Group, Global Rights is an international human rights advocacy group. INTERNATIONAL FISCAL ASSOCIATION Steven Hannes, a tax partner at McDermott, Will & Emery, was elected executive vice president of the U.S branch of the International Fiscal Association. The IFA studies tax law and its effect on international commerce. THE JOURNAL OF THE PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE SOCIETY James Barney, an associate at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, has received the 31st Annual Dr. Joseph Rossman Memorial Award for his article “In Search of ‘Ordinary Meaning,’ ” which was published in The Journal of the Patent and Trademark Office Society. The award is given annually to the author of the article that makes the greatest contribution to the field of patents, trademarks, or copyrights. Barney, who also won three years ago, is the first person to win the award twice. WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP BOARD OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY Lanae Holbrook has been named to the Women’s Leadership Board of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Holbrook, a partner at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, will help advise the school’s dean on women’s policy issues.
