San Francisco Squire, Sanders & Dempsey has added associates Mark Lupkowski and Brian Boyer to its intellectual property practice. Lupkowski practices patent prosecution relating primarily to chemical technology. He joins the firm from the Austin, Texas, IP firm of Meyertons, Hood, Kivlin, Kowert & Goetzel. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Texas School of Law. Boyer’s practice includes all aspects of IP law and focuses on patent prosecution and opinion work in a variety of technologies. Previously with Pennie & Edmonds, he is a 2001 graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law. Tax/private equity partner Timothy Burns has returned to Pillsbury Winthrop in the tax section. Burns joined the firm in 1989 and became a partner in 1997. He left the firm early last year to join Lombard Investments Inc., a client engaged in private equity management in North America and Asia. He is a Hastings College of the Law graduate. Donald Carlson, a partner at Carlson, Calladine & Peterson has been inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. Lawyers must have a minimum of 15 years of trial experience to be considered for Fellowship. Carlson is a 1977 graduate of Hastings College of the Law. North Bay Lanahan & Reilley has added Stephen Duggan to its employment and labor law practice group in Santa Rosa. Duggan has been in private practice for more than 10 years and also served as a judge advocate in the Air Force. He obtained a J.D. in 1978 from Notre Dame Law School and an LL.M. in labor law in 1987 from the National Law Center, George Washington University. Southern California Gregory Weingart, former chief of the Major Frauds Section of the U.S. attorney’s office for the Central District of California, is returning to Munger, Tolles & Olson as a partner. He will be joining the litigation department in the Los Angeles office. Weingart initially joined the firm in 1992, concentrating on complex civil litigation. He is a 1991 graduate of Harvard Law School. Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton has added three associates to its corporate practice group. These additions make a total of five new corporate practice attorneys in the past month for the San Diego offices. Stephen LaSala specializes in general business matters and securities law, with an emphasis on capital raising transactions and the buying and selling of companies. Steffani Stevens focuses on corporate finance, securities compliance, Internet and e-commerce law and the formation and restructuring of business entities. Robert Wernli Jr. specializes in business transactions, debt and equity financings, securities law compliance and M&A. Bankruptcy and business litigation attorney William Rathbone has moved his practice to the San Diego office of Gordon & Rees. Rathbone has been involved in hundreds of Chapter 11 and Chapter 7 cases as counsel for debtors, trustees, committees and creditors. He received his J.D. from California Western School of Law.
