Visa U.S.A. Inc. has just expanded its line of credit. Earlier this year, the U.S. arm of credit card giant Visa International welcomed Joshua Floum as its new vice president, GC, and secretary. Floum came to Visa U.S.A. from the Denver-based firm Holme Roberts & Owen, where he chaired the California litigation practice. The new GC’s courtroom know-how will be welcome at Visa U.S.A. Under the company’s last GC, Paul Allen, the Foster City, California-based company found itself on the losing end of two major cases. First came a 2001 ruling that struck down Visa’s policy of prohibiting its member banks from issuing cards from competitors American Express Company and Discover Financial Services. More recently, the company agreed to pay more than $2 billion to settle an antitrust class action brought by retailers. But luck at Visa U.S.A. may not be all down. With the merger between Bank One Corporation the top issuer of Visa cards and J.P. Morgan Chase and Co. a major MasterCard issuer in the works, Visa U.S.A. is vying to become the dominant credit card organization for the giant postmerger bank. With any luck, Joshua Floum will be just the GC to lead Visa U.S.A. away from its dreary litigation record and toward a new era of credit card domination all at zero interest for the company.
