SAN FRANCISCO Michael Brill Newman has joined Holland & Knight as a partner focusing on alcohol beverage law. Newman joins the firm from Buchman & O’Brien, where he oversaw the San Francisco office. He received his J.D. from Fordham University Law School in 1981. Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker has added nine new of counsel, including John Hyland in the San Francisco office. Hyland, who practices exclusively in the area of employment law, is a 1995 graduate of Golden Gate University School of Law. Coudert Brothers has hired two new lawyers in its San Francisco office. Alisa Won, formerly a partner with Preston Gates & Ellis, joins the corporate group as a senior attorney. Won’s practice includes a broad range of general business, mergers & acquisitions and corporate finance matters. She graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1993. Edward Dhong, formerly with Baker & McKenzie, focuses on representing international and domestic venture capital funds and corporate investors on capital private equity and debt investments in companies worldwide. He is a 1996 graduate of Hastings College of the Law. Joseph Malkin is the new head of the San Francisco office of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. He succeeds Dora Mao. Malkin is also co-chair of the firm’s energy & project finance group. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1972. SOUTH BAY Coudert Brothers has hired two new associates in its Palo Alto office. Kevin Ban rejoins the firm’s corporate group after a stint at Jones Day in Taiwan. He received his J.D. from the University of Iowa Law School in 1998. Damon Fisk, formerly with Lanahan & Reilly, joins the litigation group. He graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2000. San Jose’s Hopkins & Carley has added former San Jose City Attorney Joan Gallo as of counsel in its land use practice. Previously, Gallo was a partner at Realty Law. She received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1975. The firm also has hired two new associates, Jason Biggs to the real estate department, and Karen Meckstroth to the family wealth & tax planning department. Biggs received his J.D. from Santa Clara in 1996, and Meckstroth, from Hastings College of the Law in 1997. Anthony “Chi- Hung” Chan, a partner with Ropers, Majeski, Kohn & Bentley, has been elected president of HongKong-SV.com. HKSV.com is a nonprofit group based in Silicon Valley that provides a forum for high-tech professionals interested in business development and networking opportunities between Silicon Valley and Hong Kong. Since 1984, Chan has worked with Chinese companies investing in the U.S. and vice versa. He is a 1981 graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Hogan & Hartson has elected 27 new partners, including two in the Los Angeles office: Robert Benson is a member of the intellectual property group, focusing on complex IP litigation for high-profile firm clients as well as smaller clients and emerging-growth companies. He received his J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1990. Daniel Mestaz practices in the litigation group, focusing on commercial and IP litigation. He graduated from New York University School of Law in 1996. Class action specialist Ann Kane Smith has joined Thelen Reid & Priest in Los Angeles. Smith leaves Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman Machtinger & Kinsella, where she chaired the labor and employment practice group. She received her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law in 1976. Townsend and Townsend and Crew has added Raymond Hom as an associate in its San Diego office. Hom, a patent prosecutor and former patent agent, joins the firm from Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear. Paul Fine has been named president of the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel for 2004. As president, Fine will monitor legislation and initiatives that will impact the civil justice system, representing the interests of more than 2,000 Southern California civil defense attorneys.
