Laterals Jones Day: Nearly 100 attorneys from defunct intellectual property firm Pennie & Edmonds have signed on, to be based in New York, California and Washington. McDermott, Will & Emery: Capital markets lawyers Thomas McGavin and Joseph Suh, both of whom specialize in derivative and structured finance transactions, have joined as partners resident in the New York office. McGavin makes the lateral move from Clifford Chance and Suh joins the firm from San Francisco’s Morrison & Foerster. Smith Moore: Sidney S. Eagles Jr., retiring chief judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals, is joining the firm’s Raleigh, N.C., office. He will concentrate in the areas of appellate practice and government relations. New counsel Berger Singerman (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.): Melanie Ann Hines has joined as of counsel and will be based in Tallahassee, Fla. From 1991 to 2003, she served as Florida’s statewide prosecutor. With expertise in white-collar crime and corporate governance issues, Hines will focus on risk assessment, prevention and defense litigation involving business crime. Firm management Greenberg Traurig: James Bacchus, member and chairman of the appellate body of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has returned to the firm and will assume the role of chairman of its global trade practice group.
