South Bay David Bloch has joined McDermott, Will & Emery in Palo Alto as a partner. Bloch focuses primarily on complex IP litigation matters, including commercial disputes surrounding patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, as well as the intersections of antitrust and IP law and government contracts and IP law. He was previously with Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich. Bloch received his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1996. Retired Santa Clara County Judge Joseph Biafore Jr. has joined JAMS. Biafore was appointed to the Santa Clara bench in 1983 by Gov. George Deukmejian, where he served until retiring last month. He earned his J.D. from the University of Utah College of Law in 1964. East Bay Murchison & Cumming has elevated Kasey Covert to partner in its Lafayette office. Previously, Covert had practiced for seven years in the San Diego office, handling complex litigation, before moving north to manage the firm’s first office in Northern California. She is a graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law. Carl Whitaker, formerly chief marketing officer of Morrison & Foerster and most recently vice president of Bothwell Marketing, has formed a new marketing and communications company, Whitaker Communications. With offices in Berkeley, Whitaker advises law firms on marketing planning, positioning, public relations and client development. Sacramento Olson, Hagel & Fishburn has named a new partner, Deborah Caplan, who has been an associate at the firm since 1998. She received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979. Two new associates also have been hired: Robert McWhorter, who has worked in political and campaign law for more than 10 years, and Erin Peth, who has a background in political and government law. McWhorter is a Wayne State University Law School graduate, and Peth graduated from UC-Davis’ King Hall School of Law. Southern California Los Angeles-based Murchison & Cumming has elevated Guy Gruppie to senior partner. Gruppie specializes in the defense of product liability, catastrophic injury and business litigation matters. A former journalist, he graduated from Loyola Law School in 1991. Also named a partner in Los Angeles is Gina Och, a member of the firm’s law and appellate practice group. Och previously worked as a research attorney for the Los Angeles County Superior Court. She is a graduate of UCLA School of Law. Haight, Brown & Bonesteel has appointed appellate specialist Rita Gunasekaran as chair of its appellate practice group in Los Angeles. She joined the firm in 1986 after working as a research attorney at the court of appeal in Los Angeles. In addition, the appellate department has a newly elevated partner, J. Alan Warfield. Warfield is a certified specialist in civil appeals and works extensively on trial-level litigation. He previously worked at the attorney general’s office. Warfield earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego in 1996.
