Reed Smith’s Washington, D.C., office will absorb eight lawyers from an Alexandria, Va.-based intellectual property firm, the firms announced Monday. “This combination substantially strengthens our intellectual property capabilities in D.C., a key market for national IP practices,” said Reed Smith Managing Partner Gregory Jordan in a press release. “It will allow Reed Smith to more readily provide IP services to our life sciences clients, as well as IP legal services to clients currently using FDA, products liability and government contracts as well as other legal services from the firm.” Shanks & Herbert is a 7-year-old intellectual property firm that specializes in chemical, pharmaceutical and software intellectual property issues. In a statement, Shanks & Herbert’s name partners Mark Shanks and Toni-Junell Herbert praised the deal. “This move will allow us to provide a broader range of services to our current clients in all areas as well as to expand IP offerings for Reed Smith life sciences clients,” Shanks said. Effective Jan. 2, Shanks & Herbert lawyers and seven staff members will join Reed Smith’s 86-attorney Washington, D.C., office, said Michael Pollack, a director of planning and strategic growth at Reed Smith. The Shanks & Herbert firm will dissolve. The deal jelled after Shanks & Herbert’s work caught the eye of Reed Smith’s Falls Church, Va., managing partner, James Gallatin Jr., Pollack said. Reed Smith is hunting for more IP talent to beef up its New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles and London offices, Pollack said. The most attractive hires will “fit a strategic need as well,” he added. Reed Smith is a national law firm with nearly 1,000 attorneys. Reed Smith’s California locations include offices in Oakland and Century City.
