San Francisco The International Trademark Association has recognized J. Thomas McCarthy as a leader in intellectual property with the 2003 INTA President’s Award. McCarthy, with more than 40 years of experience as a trademark lawyer, is one of two recipients of the award. A Morrison & Foerster partner, McCarthy is also a professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law. South Bay Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich partner Patrick McGaraghan has been elected president of the board of directors of Palo Alto’s Children’s Health Council. The CHC provides interdisciplinary, educational, assessment and treatment services to children who face developmental and behavioral challenges. McGaraghan, a member of the real estate practice, received his J.D. from University of San Francisco School of Law in 1969. East Bay Archer Norris has added three attorneys to its Walnut Creek office. Kimberly Scala joins the firm as an associate. Her practice includes a wide range of transactions and business matters, with a focus on real estate leasing, financing and acquisition/disposition. She received her J.D. from UC-Davis School of Law. Colin Munro, joining the firm as a senior associate, continues his complex civil litigation and trial practice in the areas of product liability, premises liability, finance and commercial litigation. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge in England. Thomas Clifton has joined as of counsel. He practices in the area of public entity defense, insurance and reinsurance and is a graduate of UC-Davis School of Law. Southern California Brian Kelly has joined the Los Angeles office of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips as a partner. Kelly’s focus is on intellectual property, technology, Internet and electronic commerce law. Before joining Manatt, he was a partner at Fenwick & West. Kelly received his J.D. from Duke University in 1993. Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald has added 10 associates, including three in Irvine. Sherri Martinelli is returning to the firm after living in Oregon for the past year. Martinelli practices in surety and construction law. She is a 1997 graduate of Pepperdine University School of Law. Benjamin Benumof, previously a clerk at the firm, will practice in construction and surety law. He received his J.D. from the University of San Diego this year. Henry Ma was previously a summer associate. His practice areas will include construction, government contracts, commercial real estate and surety law. He is a 2003 Hastings College of the Law graduate. Charles Dick Jr. has been elected to the Board of Regents of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Dick is the managing partner of the San Diego office of Baker & McKenzie. With a practice focusing on securities litigation, he has acted as lead trial counsel in more than 20 of the largest shareholder lawsuits in the country.
