Laterals Manatt, Phelps & Phillips (Los Angeles): A group of attorneys led by advertising, marketing and media law specialists Linda A. Goldstein and Jeffrey S. Edelstein has joined the firm’s New York office. The new arrivals also include partners Michael Barkow, William Heberer and Charulata Pagar; counsel Felix Kent; and associates Jennifer Deitch, Jennifer Koester, Julia Reytblat and Lindsay Schoen. All come from New York’s Hall Dickler Kent Goldstein & Wood. Margolis Edelstein (Philadelphia): The insurance defense firm has acquired lateral partners Mark C. Stephenson and Timothy W. Stalker. Stephenson will help develop the employee benefits department; Stalker will head the reinsurance department. Both will be resident in the home office. Patton Boggs (Washington): The arrival of new partners Debbie Swanstrom (formerly of Boston’s Sullivan & Worcester) and Amy Koch (previously with Washington’s Cameron McKenna) has augmented the firm’s energy practice group. They are accompanied by associates Adam A. Moniz, Jennifer H. Tribulski, Judith M. Andrade and Jennifer L. Schwitzer. Polsinelli Shalton & Welte (Kansas City, Mo.): Mary Beth Blake, with 26 years of experience in the health care arena, has joined the firm as the new chairwoman of its health care group, to be based in its Overland Park, Kan., office. She has represented doctors, institutions, home health agencies and laboratories, and is a co-founder of the Midwest Bioethics Center. Steel Hector & Davis (Miami): Miami-Dade County, Fla., Circuit Judge Leslie Rothenberg has retired from the bench to join the Miami office as a partner with the litigation group. Also joining the firm is Amelia Rea Maguire, a new partner with Miami’s corporate securities and finance group. She arrives from Holland & Knight. New counsel Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton (New York): Six new counsel have been elected: Laurent Ruzette (Brussels, tax law and transactional work); Michael Brems (Frankfurt, Germany, corporate transactions); David H. Herrington (New York, litigation); Matteo Beretta (Rome/Milan, E.U. and Italian antitrust law); Francesco De Biasi (Rome/Milan, Italian corporate law) and Steven Kaiser (Washington, litigation). Greenblum & Bernstein (Reston, Va.): The intellectual property firm has added to its roster Chief Administrative Patent Judge Bruce H. Stoner Jr., a 33-year veteran of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He joins as of counsel with the interference practice group and the appellate and post-issuance patent office practices. Jones Day: Law professor Samuel Estreicher is joining the firm as of counsel in the New York labor and employment, and appeals and issues groups. Estreicher, who writes a regular column for NLJ-sister publication The New York Law Journal, previously served as counsel at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. Proskauer Rose (New York): The firm has promoted three associates to the position of senior counsel: Michael A. Katz (tax department), John C. Stellabotte (litigation and dispute resolution department and patent law practice) and Elise A. Yablonski (litigation and dispute resolution department). Firm management Michael Best & Friedrich (Milwaukee): Partner Robyn S. Shapiro has been named chairwoman of the firm’s health care practice area. An authority on bioethics issues, she represents clients on matters including health information privacy, informed consent and medical staff, regulatory and licensing issues. Named Nina M. Gussack has been named by the Defense Research Institute to chair the Drug and Medical Device Committee, an international association of trial lawyers and corporate counsel who act for the defense in pharmaceutical and medical device litigation. Philadelphia-based Gussack is currently chairwoman of Pepper Hamilton’s health effects litigation practice and vice chairwoman of the firm’s executive committee. Honored Richard Anderson, a New York-based partner at Washington’s Arnold & Porter, received a 2003 Pro Bono Award from the Legal Aid Society recognizing his years of service as Continuing Legal Education faculty member of the society’s pro bono training program. Anderson received notice for his exceptional voluntary services to low-income and disenfranchised New Yorkers. Obituary John Hart Ely, esteemed law professor and constitutional scholar, has died of cancer at age 64. He is the author of Democracy and Distrust: A Theory of Judicial Review, an important work of constitutional scholarship notable for proposing a distinctive middle ground as between the conventional positions taken on judges’ proper roles in interpreting the Constitution.
