CONGRESSIONAL SERVICE AWARD John Rhodesof Hunton & Williams was awarded the Congressional Distinguished Service Award at a July 8 ceremony at the Capitol. The former Arizona representative was recognized by House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) for his exemplary dedication to diverse legislative interests and the enrichment of the lives of the American people. D.C. BAR The D.C. Bar’s Computer and Telecommunications Law Section elected Sana Colemanof Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn to serve a three-year term on the steering committee. Coleman is an Arent Fox associate specializing in telecommunications and intellectual property. JEWISH FEDERATION Latham & Watkins D.C. partner Stuart Kurlanderwas honored by the mayor of Afula, Israel, for helping to promote the early childhood education of Ethiopian families newly arrived in Israel. Kurlander, who serves as vice president for the Israel and overseas division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, received the honor on behalf of the federation while on a goodwill tour of Israel. MORELLA WHISTLEBLOWER AWARDS Three departing civil service leaders were honored June 27 with the new Connie Morella Whistleblower Award. The first recipients of this award were Beth Slavet,past chair of the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, and former Special Counsel Elaine Kaplanand former Deputy Special Counsel Timothy Hannapel,both of the U.S. Office of Special Counsel. Named in honor of the former congresswoman, the award is sponsored by a number of groups, including the Fund for Constitutional Government and the Government Accountability Project, and recognizes federal employees who have gone beyond the call of duty to protect the rights of whistleblowers. NATIONAL HOUSING HALL OF FAME The National Association of Home Builders announced the addition of Peter Segal,a partner at Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy and outside general counsel to the NAHB, to its National Housing Hall of Fame. Also honored were Franklin Raines,chairman and CEO of Fannie Mae; Nicolas Retsinas,director of the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University; and H. Daniel Pincus,former president of the NAHB and president of HDP Industries. PRESIDENT’S EXPORT COUNCIL Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld partner Edward Rubinoffhas been appointed to the President’s Export Council Subcommittee on Export Administration, which advises the president and the U.S. government on the development and implementation of export controls, as well as sanctions and security-related trade matters.
