Pennie & Edmonds is opening an office in San Diego, making it the second intellectual property shop to move into the city in as many months. The move, announced Friday, gives New York-based Pennie & Edmonds its fourth U.S. office, and a long-desired presence in one of the country’s top IP centers. The office will initially consist of four attorneys and a patent agent when it opens its doors Sept. 1. Anthony Insogna, a partner in Pennie & Edmond’s New York office, will move to San Diego to head up the new office. And the firm has lured Morrison & Foerster partner Laurie Axford to help jump-start the new office. “Initially our focus is going to be on the biotech industry,” said Insogna. “Pennie & Edmonds has been servicing clients in San Diego biotech for years. We’ve had a very strong presence in California through our Palo Alto office and this is just a natural extension.” Among the 180-attorney firm’s existing San Diego clients are a Kirin Brewery subsidiary and Signal Pharmaceuticals Inc., a division of Celgene. The firm has signed a seven-year lease for a roughly 10,000-square-foot office space in the Carmel Valley region of San Diego. In June, Townsend and Townsend and Crew announced that it was opening a San Diego outpost, with plans to grow the office to nine attorneys within the next year.
