EMPLOYMENT a former director of finance for a medical group was awarded $1.5 million by a Texas jury on May 16 after alleging that she was terminated for improper reasons. While working for Laredo Medical Group Corp., Josefina B. Mireles, 46, questioned the propriety of paying the chairman of the board $140,000-without board approval-especially in light of the fact that other board members received no compensation at all. She also argued that no minutes were kept of the board meeting at which her termination was allegedly discussed, suggesting improper motives. She also claimed that although the company claimed she was terminated to save money, it began advertising an opening for the position as soon as she was gone. Mireles v. Laredo Medical Group Corp., No. 2001CV Q001089-D2 (Webb Co., Texas, Dist. Ct.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEYS: Ray Thomas, Andy Gonzales, David Jones and Ronald Rodriguez, Kittleman, Thomas, Ramirez & Gonzales, McAllen, Texas DEFENSE ATTORNEYS: Chris Sherer and Felicity Anne Fowler, Haynes and Boone, Houston
