What Did Rambus Know, and When Did THEY know it? That question is at the core of our riveting feature story this month, by senior reporter Krysten Crawford (“Chipping Away,” page 82). Chip industry rivals and the Federal Trade Commission have accused Rambus of a number of sins. They say the Los Altos, California — based company sat on an industry standards-setting body for chip memory designs and simultaneously developed patents on those very standards — without disclosing that information. Did Rambus game the system? GC John Danforth denies it, telling Crawford, “We weren’t that clever.” Maybe it’s the standards-setting system itself that’s flawed. We explore that question in “Standard Deviation,” (page 86). In any case, this is a complicated, fascinating tale — think North by Northwest or Memento for lawyers — complete with villains, heroes, and a Silicon Valley backdrop. The story was a natural fit for Crawford. The Santa Barbara, California, native has spent ten years reporting on outside counsel’s role in complex litigation. At Corporate Counsel over the past year, she has shifted her focus to the attorney who has to pay those bills and break the news of a verdict to the CEO. We’re convinced that reporting on high-stakes litigation, from the inside, is what Crawford does best. See for yourself.
