I read with interest your recent article ["Losing It All," February] on [former Tyco International Ltd. GC] Mark Belnick. As a parent of a freshman student at Cornell University, I was appalled to learn that Mr. Belnick was still teaching undergraduate law courses there despite his legal woes. Students and teachers at the university have been protesting this to no avail. Had my child been interested in law and/or one of his courses, I would have voiced my disgust to the administration as well. I think this should have been included in your article as an additional indication of his obvious lack of judgment. I’m not saying he should have been fired by the university, but at least suspended until the resolution of his legal issues. After all, what kind of a picture does this present to some of our brightest young minds? Forget the axiom “innocent until proven guilty”; I think it really says that money and power mean more than anything else in society today. As kids like to say, “It’s the bling-bling that counts.” And that is precisely what got him in trouble. For the sake of the kids, you would think he would be able to recognize the negative influence caused by his presence and the foolishness of his situation. Steven J.
