Owens Corning also raided its law department recently to fill a key job. The Toledo-based company made Stephen Krull, formerly vice president and general counsel of operations, its new vice president for corporate communications. The 37-year-old Krull had been the number two person in the law group, reporting to GC and chief restructuring officer Maura Abeln Smith. But, given lawyers’ stereotypical caution and reserve, why would a company put one in charge of articulating corporate policy? According to company spokesperson Dave Dimmer, Krull was “just a real lucky fit.” Krull explains that the prior head of corporate communications died unexpectedly, and all media inquiries were getting sent to the already overworked Abeln. Delivering legally accurate information to the press and public is essential right now, says Krull, because the company is emerging from Chapter 11 and is also in the midst of intensive strategic planning. Krull, who has no prior public relations experience, calls his new post “a blast.” Although he reports to CEO Dave Brown, Krull says he feels as though he reports to Owens Corning’s 19,000 employees. “I owe an obligation to the people in the plants to let them know what’s going on with the company,” he says. “And I love doing that.” Before going in-house, Krull practiced with Chicago’s Sidley & Austin (now Sidley Austin Brown & Wood). He earned his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
