Veronica Dillon cannot remember her SAT or LSAT scores, but, fortunately for her, standardized test scores are not a prerequisite for promotion at her job. Dillon, general counsel at Kaplan Inc.-a provider of educational and standardized testing training to students and professionals-is moving up in the ranks. Kaplan named her executive vice president and chief administrative officer. She will continue to wear her general counsel’s hat. Dillon, 53, jumped to the New York-based testing business in 1991. “Back then, Kaplan had no corporate counsel, no human resources, and just one person to handle the company’s real estate deals. The company’s revenues were less than $100 million,” Dillon says. But, she adds, “I was attracted by the fact that it was an educational company. It was an opportunity to start out and run my own shop.” The company is now worth $500 billion and is owned by The Washington Post Company. Before joining Kaplan, Dillon was the associate general counsel at Macmillan, Inc. Prior to that stint, she was a staff attorney at the New York office of the Federal Trade Commission. A graduate of Fordham University Law School, she started her career as an associate at New York’s Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.
