ETHICS ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Supreme Court of Virginia’s chief justice has appointed Thomas Spahn,a commercial litigation partner in the Tysons Corner office of McGuireWoods, to serve on the Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee. As a member of the committee, Spahn will issue advisory opinions analyzing whether proposed changes in judges’ conduct comply with the Canons of Judicial Conduct. Spahn’s term will expire on Jan. 30, 2005. INNER CIRCLE Patrick Malone,a partner at D.C.’s Stein, Mitchell & Mezines, has been elected to the Inner Circle of Advocates, an invitation-only society made up of personal injury plaintiffs lawyers. The purpose of the Inner Circle, according to its founder, Richard Grand, is to allow experienced plaintiffs attorneys “to share information about whatever it takes to be a great trial lawyer.” The Inner Circle limits its membership to 100 attorneys. Malone is the second D.C. lawyer to be invited to join the group. U.S. JUDICIAL CONFERENCE Chief Justice William Rehnquist has appointed Chief Judge Carolyn Dineen Kingof the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit as chairwoman of the Executive Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States. Chief Judge King has served as a Judicial Conference member since 1999, and as a Conference Executive Committee member since 2000. The Executive Committee is the top-level executive arm of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the policy-making body for the federal court system. It examines administrative and policy issues concerning the courts, and makes recommendations to Congress regarding legislation related to the judicial branch. VA. PUBLIC SCHOOL AUTHORITY James Wheaton,a partner in the Virginia Beach office of Troutman Sanders, has been named by Gov. Mark Warner as chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Virginia Public School Authority. Wheaton has been a member of the School Board of Chesapeake, Va., for almost 10 years.
