Tammy Chung Ryu has been tapped for the Los Angeles County Superior Court bench, becoming the first Korean-American woman judge in California history. Since 1988, Ryu, 41, whose appointment was announced Friday by Gov. Gray Davis, has served as supervising attorney in the health, education and welfare section of the state attorney general’s office. Ryu’s major achievement while with the attorney general’s office was a victory in a consolidated action of more than 200 lawsuits brought by hospitals who had been denied Medi-Cal claims totaling more than $14 million. Ryu won the case after a 45-day trial. She has served in a variety of professional organizations including the Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission of the State Bar from 1996 to 1998 and as a lawyer representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference from 1998 to 2001. She was also president of the Korean American Bar Association of Southern California. In 1999, Ryu was appointed by Attorney General Bill Lockyer as his liaison to the Korean-American community in California. Ryu was born in Seoul, South Korea, and attended high school and college in the East Bay. She earned her J.D. from UCLA School of Law.
