Penn State University disclosed late Tuesday that it had spent nearly $17 million on fees to outside lawyers, consultants, and public relations professionals as a result of the child sex abuse scandal emanating from the criminal charges and eventual conviction of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

But the publicly funded State College, Pennsylvania–based university—whose board of trustees earlier this year mulled going private—declined to provide a breakdown detailing how much the school has paid its outside law firms. Two of those firms—Freeh, Sporkin & Sullivan and Pepper Hamilton—agreed to merge last week, according to sibling publication The Legal Intelligencer.
