The new year could see the state’s indigent defense system hiring seven staff attorneys, paying contract lawyers more to handle appeals and revising its procedure for addressing indigent defendants’ requests for conflict-free appellate counsel.
The changes are part of last month’s settlement to a class action against the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council and state officials on behalf of convicted offenders seeking new appellate lawyers.
