Kevin Ring, a former Greenberg Traurig partner and lobbyist who worked with Jack Abramoff, was sentenced on Oct. 26 in federal court in Washington to 20 months in prison, according to a news release from the U.S. Justice Department. The sentence is a fraction of the 17 years that federal prosecutors recommended, and it’s below even the guideline range of 21 to 27 months that Ring’s lawyers from Miller & Chevalier said was appropriate. In a written opinion last month, Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia set the guideline range at 46 to 57 months. A jury found Ring, 41, guilty a year ago in a scheme to trade meals, trips and other things of value for favors from public officials. He was convicted on five of eight counts including conspiracy, paying an illegal gratuity and honest-services wire fraud. It was his second trial. Ring remains free pending appeal. His lawyers, including Miller & Chevalier’s Andrew Wise, declined to comment pending the appeal. Click here for a 2008 story from Legal Times detailing Ring’s dealings, including meals and tickets to the NBA’s Washington Wizards, with former Justice Department official Robert Coughlin II, whom Ring met when they were both young staffers on Capitol Hill.
