Karen Shaer has taken what she calls a “serendipitous” route to her post as general counsel at Garden City Group Inc., a legal administrative services provider for class action settlements and bankruptcy cases. It’s a path that was at least partially shaped by her quest for work that would allow her to balance motherhood with a challenging career.

Shaer met her husband while an associate at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and the two later decided to apply to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. They both landed jobs there and were sworn in on the same day.
