The Hofstra University School of Law is getting a new name. It will become the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, in honor of alumnus Maurice Deane, who donated $20 million to the school. Deane has a long history with the school, from which he graduated in 1981 after enrolling at age 50. Since then, he has served on Hofstra’s board of trustees, endowed a professorship, mentored law students and established a scholarship. The law school library is already named for Deane. “Maurice holds a very special place in the history and the development of the law school,” said Stuart Rabinowitz, the university’s president and former law dean. “He is a person of impeccable integrity and with a deep commitment to academic and professional excellence.” Deane spent 26 years with Endo Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company that was sold to E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. in 1969. Following the sale, Deane became president of Endo, thenceforth operated as an independent subsidiary of Du Pont. He retired eight years later. Law dean Nora Demleitner said Deane’s donation would be added to the school’s endowment, the proceeds of which will be used for academic initiatives. “The goal is to focus on academic and student support, as well as student scholarships,” she said. Demleitner hopes to invest some of the proceeds into the law school’s existing institutes and establish several new ones. The law school, located in Hempstead, N.Y., is celebrating its 40th anniversary. “This is a great opportunity for a law school that is still relatively young,” she said.
