Years ago, I used to compliment a lawyer who had mentored me by telling people that he “has forgotten more law than I’ll ever know.”

Intended as a bit of hyperbolic flattery, I now realize it may have been a lot closer than I thought to being objectively true. In fact, his memory probably bore less resemblance to a library than it did to Swiss cheese.
