Rather than mislabeling attorney billable hours as measures of productivity, says Steven Harper, an index should permit excessive hours to convey their true meaning: attorney misery. This "misery index" could help reveal a firm's culture, writes the Northwestern adjunct professor and retired Kirkland partner.
