The U.S. Marshals Service can start selling the rest of jailed attorney Scott Rothstein’s seized property and toys following his conviction for running a $1.2 billion investment fraud. U.S. District Judge James I. Cohn in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday issued a final forfeiture order giving the green light for the federal caretaker to sell real estate, 15 automobiles and other items to reimburse Rothstein’s Ponzi victims. Some items already have been auctioned. Rothstein ran a bogus settlement scam from his opulent chairman’s office at the Fort Lauderdale law firm Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison for his guilty plea to racketeering and fraud. The seized items include the surrendered home of RRA’s chief operating officer Debra Villegas, who is serving a 10-year prison sentence. Vehicles range from a 2006 silver Hummer H1 to a 2007 Rolls-Royce and a 2009 blue Maserati Granturismo Coupe. Cohn projected $5.6 million in proceeds from the sale of boats and vehicles alone. A total of 304 watches and an assortment of necklaces and earrings also can be offered for sale. Rothstein’s criminal defense attorney, Marc Nurik, did not return a call for comment by deadline.
