Five partners from Boston-based commercial litigation boutique Hanify & King will join Jones Day’s new Boston office, which the firm plans to open in January. Name partner John Hanify, who is also a leader in the firm’s business litigation practice, is among the attorneys joining Jones Day. The other four also have a business litigation practice. They are Michael Marcucci; Christopher Morrison, who is also an intellectual property litigator; Jeffrey Upton; and Karen Whitley, who is an employment lawyer. In a telephone interview, Hanify said that he and his colleagues have worked with Jones Day as a local counsel over the years. “I have come to know not only the firm and its lawyers [but also] the pretty remarkable principles that direct the firm’s practice and make it so intensely client-oriented,” Hanify said. Jones Day’s client service “and the opportunity to practice law without worrying about management or administration was a big attraction for me,” Hanify said. Joining the global firm will also afford him “a new opportunity to develop and serve clients that I haven’t been able to before, many of them will be larger,” Hanify said. In November, Jones Day announced plans to launch a Boston office in January. At the time, the firm announced it would open with three partners transferring from other Jones Day offices. The firm said a fourth partner, Thomas “Tim” Cullen Jr., the firmwide head of Jones Day’s trial practice, would divide his time between Washington and Boston. The firm announced that it plans to quickly create a full-service Boston office, with about 20 lawyers by the end of the first quarter of 2011. “The addition of these highly talented lawyers — all of whom are well known in and well regarded by the Boston legal community — not only provides Jones Day with an even greater base of talent in Boston but underscores the firm’s long-term commitment to Boston,” stated Traci Lovitt, partner-in-charge of Jones Day’s Boston office, in a press release. In an interview, Lovitt said Jones Day “knew about John Hanify before the firm ever started thinking about Boston because he has a national reputation as a lawyer … . We’re bringing in someone we’ve known for a while and we’ve long respected and whose reputation for legal services goes well outside of Boston.” The roughly 40-lawyer Hanify & King has also expanded its own footprint during the past few years. In April 2008, the firm opened a Washington office with five intellectual property lawyers from Bingham McCutchen. In October of that year, Hanify & King launched a New York outpost with one attorney and help from firm lawyers who were also New York bar members. The firm’s specialties include corporate, real estate, bankruptcy, commercial litigation and intellectual property litigation and prosecution. “We wish them well,” said Jim King, Hanify & King’s president and co-founder. “On our part, we’re going to continue to provide the same practical services we’ve been providing for more than 30 years.”
