DLA Piper has brought aboard two more partners from Nixon Peabody, this time to its litigation practice in San Francisco. The additions of Paul Hall and Todd Toral bring to 11 the number of Nixon Peabody partners who have moved to DLA Piper since May. Hall was the co-chairman of Nixon Peabody’s national class action team. His practice will focus on representing financial institutions in class actions, wage and hour cases, and retirement matters. Toral, who was deputy practice group leader for Nixon Peabody’s commercial litigation team, will concentrate his practice on finance, tax, workout and insolvency matters. The recent departures of Nixon Peabody partners to DLA Piper were sparked by the move in May of Peter White, a sports and entertainment partner and a major rainmaker at the firm. Following that move were the June departures of insurance partner Michael Murphy, who was Nixon Peabody’s largest shareholder, and Frank Ryan, former chairman of Nixon Peabody’s litigation practice. DLA Piper hired Henry Liu, the head of Nixon Peabody’s China and Asia Pacific practices, in June. Hiring Hall and Toral is part of the DLA Piper’s goal of strengthening its “high-end litigation practice,” said J. Terence O’Malley, U.S. managing partner of DLA Piper. “This will materially add to our financial service capabilities in northern California,” O’Malley said. Nixon Peabody issued a statement about the departures of Hall and Toral. “We recognize Paul and Todd’s past contributions with the firm. Our strong 30 percent business growth in northern California over the past two years with accomplished and collaborative attorneys in this competitive market makes us very pleased. Our commitment to continuing to grow in this important market remains a clear priority.” DLA Piper has about 3,500 attorneys in 30 countries.
