William Dougherty spent 40 years servicing appliances for Sears Roebuck before being fired from the Concord, Calif., branch at the age of 64.

A Contra Costa County jury in April backed Dougherty in his age discrimination suit. But he didn’t get much: $67,000 in compensatory damages, nothing for emotional distress. And in July, the judge invalidated the verdict.
