Shortly after a $1.2 billion semiconductor transaction wrapped up last week for STMicroelectronics, news broke Thursday that German software giant SAP plunked down about $5.8 billion for California-based database software maker Sybase. Shearman & Sterling represented Sybase in the deal; Jones Day advised SAP. Shearman & Sterling partner Michael Dorf said he's not ready to extrapolate any larger market trends based on the two transactions.
