V. Michael Simko Jr. and his father, Vincent M. Simko Sr., started a law firm together in 1994. After butting heads for years over management issues, Simko Jr. left and then sued his father, alleging that he's owed $300,000 in legal fees. The suit has "devastated" the Simko family, says wife-mother Jeanette. Attorneys who run law firms with their children say professional disputes can lead to disastrous results. "That's one of the risks of these situations," said attorney Vincent Trantolo, who works with his two sons.

About 20 years ago, V. Michael Simko Jr. listened to his father and decided that he should carve out a career in the law.
Previously, Simko Jr. had worked in construction jobs, and while they paid well, there was no clear path toward a real career. So the younger Simko earned his law degree and, in 1988, he started practicing with his father, Vincent M. Simko Sr., in a small Bridgeport, Conn., law firm.
