Though speculation about the potential nominee always increases in the day or two after a justice's retirement announcement, it may also signal a genuine effort by the White House to broaden its list. As one Washington insider close to the nomination process said Monday, "I can almost hear [President Barack Obama] saying, 'Who else you got?'"

For months, the list of hopefuls has been thought to include Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Judge Diane Wood of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Merrick Garland of the D.C. Circuit, as well as Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
