The United States said Wednesday it will contribute $5 million to a U.N.-backed tribunal in Cambodia set up to try surviving Khmer Rouge leaders with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The U.N.-backed Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, which began operating in 2007, has so far spent more than $100 million but has concluded hearing only one case, against Kaing Geuk Eau, alias Duch, who headed a torture center in Phnom Penh.

The announcement of the contribution was made by Stephen Rapp, U.S. ambassador at large for War Crimes Issues, at the end of a three-day trip to Cambodia.
